Chapter Thirty-one

My muzzle was ten inches from Robert’s head, but his caustic smirk widened.

While I was sweating bullets, struggling to talk him out of not killing my friend, he was enjoying the banter.

Behind me, Katy was whispering something urgent to Mia. I prayed they were by the closet, close enough to slip through and escape if a shootout began.

Robert’s eyes bored into mine, that ugly jeer on his face taunting me. He knew he had the upper hand. If devils wandered this planet, I was staring at one right now.

“What are you trying to prove, holding a gun to an innocent woman’s head?” I said.

“It’s too late to ask that question,” he snarled. “Should have thought of that before you drove all the way here.”

“We came for a friend’s wedding. How could—”

I stopped as my mind cleared. Victoria’s hasty marriage had nothing to do with love, and everything to do with money.

“This is about her property, isn’t it?” I said. “You want Cedar Cottage and all that prime land.”

Robert narrowed his eyes.

“You’re trying to get your dirty hands on Victoria’s estate.”

The smirk turned into a scowl.

Bingo.

“How’s business these days?” I said, keeping my voice casual, suppressing the urge to grab him by the neck and smash that Adam’s apple.

But if he was deranged enough to kill Rebeca and slash Mia, he wouldn’t think twice of shooting Nancy, a woman he just met.

Nancy stood slumped over, her shoulders drawn in and her face toward the floor, like she was trying to make herself as small as possible.

“The new ski franchise has taken away most of your customers, I hear,” I said. “You shoveled a ton of cash into upgrading your resort and buying all that machinery. You’re deep in the red, aren’t you, Robert?”

“That’s none of your damn business.”

“It becomes my business when you mess with my friends.”

An anguished wail came from behind me.

Mia.

Why isn’t she in the closet already?

Though Robert’s presence grated on every nerve of my body, I had to keep him talking.

“You sent Chandler to Cedar Cottage to seduce Victoria. Then you arranged this phony wedding, so you’d own her property by proxy. Are you looking for more land to expand your resort? Or did you plan to sell Cedar Cottage to the highest bidder to pay your debts?”

“What the hell are you talking about?” he growled.

His face had turned a light purple, and his eyes wavered. He was nervous, and he was losing focus. From the corner of my eye, I saw his latch on Nancy loosen.

“Chandler doesn’t love Victoria,” I said. “So why on earth were you planning to hold another wedding in Paris?”

I badly wanted to double-check my phone.

My cell was snug inside my pant pocket, which meant there would be no video, but this audio alone would be priceless. It would be all I needed to nail this man. If it was still on.

“Because even with the new family connection,” I continued, “you weren’t sure you could talk Victoria into handing over her estate to you, am I right?”

His scowl deepened.
